How Do You Preserve (or Dry) Real Pampas Grass?
- Dry plumes by tying a small bunch with string and hanging upside down in a cool, dark place for about two weeks.
- You can use a closet and tie them with a string from hangers.
- Once dry, the plumes are fragile.
- Coat each plume with a light coating of hairspray to protect. This will keep them from shedding.
What is the Best Time to Dry your Plumes?
Dry your plumes when they are fully emerged, but BEFORE they are mature and begin to shed.
Artificial Pampas Grass vs. Real Pampas Grass
Which is Better? Deciding Between the Two
Characteristics of Real Grass
- Real pampas grass tends to be fluffier.
- Plumes are more organic looking.
- Real dried pampas grass may have nuances of color within the same grass.
Characteristics of Fake Grass
- Artificial pampas grass looks cleaner with sharper, crisper lines.
- Fake pampas grass doesn’t look as fluffy, airy, or wispy.
- The plumes look more predictable, with straight, defined edges.
- There aren’t subtleties in color variety.
- You will find harsher colors and dyed colors.
In the end, it is a personal decision based on your priorities.
Which to choose? It may come down to the look or the style you are going for.

Thank you Shawna! We are glad you love how Jodie’s dining room turned out. I feel I can take some credit. I was visiting her home, and helped her put together this tablescape. I even added the pampas grass as the centerpiece. She did everything else, but at least I can claim I helped 🙂 We hope you continue to enjoy our blog. All the best, Julie & Jodie
Wrap the stems with wire, string, or a rubber band and hang upside down in a cool, dry spot for three weeks. A closet or other out-of-the-way location is ideal. Tie them on a clothes hanger with thin string or dental floss. Your pampas grass will be somewhat brittle once it has dried.
