Fall Home Tour, Best Decorating Tips & Tricks, Inspiration for Your Festive Fall Home
Welcome, Friends, to my Festive Fall Home Tour. In this post I am going to take you through my home specially decorated for the fall season. As we travel from room to room I share my decorating strategies, step by step, and resources so you can create your own gorgeous and festive fall home.
I am Julie, one half of the twin blogging team, The Design Twins. My sister Jodie and I love to share our decorating ideas, seasonal updates, DIY projects and more. If you’re new with us we sure hope you feel welcome. Sign up to receive our blog in your email inbox so you don’t miss any of our inspiring posts.
Fan of Fall
While I am certainly a fan of summer I have always loved fall. Firstly, I love change. I really enjoy the newness of fall. After a few months of summer heat I always look forward to cooler temps and the beauty of the changing leaves. I also absolutely love fall decorating. Even before I became a decorator and had little to no time to spend on decorating I couldn’t skip fall decor. And now my love of fall decorating has only grown stronger. Creating a festive fall home doesn’t need to be expensive or hard. I am going to show you how.
My New Front Door Paint Color
As many of you know who followed along on my Instagram stories I recently had my exterior front doors painted. I partnered with Sherwin-Willaims for this project. I am a huge fan of their quality paints and am so happy with the color I chose. It’s called North Star (SW 6246). If you can’t tell, it’s a very light silvery grey. I chose their Emerald Exterior Acrylic Latex paint in gloss.
Their Emerald products were recommended specifically by my professional painter for superior durability. Look for my upcoming blog post all about exterior painting. I will be sharing my pro painter’s step-by-step process and recommendations for DIY painting. You can shop all of Sherwin-Williams products and view their inspiration gallery now.
Incredible Handmade Wreaths
There may be no single better way to create the look of a festive fall home than with the perfect wreath. I am in love with my beautiful new hand-made wreaths from our friend Jessica @the.accidental.farmgirl. Jessica is really at the top of her field. Jodie and I have never encountered more beautiful, creative, or well-made wreaths before. And, her wreaths are always so original.
First Impressions of a Festive Fall Home
We all know how important first impressions are. Your home is no different. Your first chance to make a great impression is at your front door. And you want to make a good one. A little extra effort is definitely worth your while. You will enjoy it, your guests will love it, and it will enhance the curb appeal for everyone who passes by.
- Clean it up. Time to remove dead plants, spiderwebs, leaves, etc., and give it a good cleaning.
- Regular Maintenance. Is it time to give your front door a fresh coat of paint?
- Decorate Your Door. Of course, I love wreaths, but there are also plenty of other options. I have hanging baskets that I use often and change what’s inside. This is a fun and cost-efficient way to regularly update your front door.
- Decorate Around Your Door. Create a frame around your doors. I like to use faux topiaries and other plants.
- Create a Place to Sit. If you have room, a chair or bench is an inviting addition and one you may enjoy using.
- Finish with Details. If you have a chair or a bench, don’t forget the all-important details like a seasonal pillow and a throw. Here is where you can get really creative. Express yourself by creating a unique and inviting display.
Find Your Festive Fall Home Inspiration
I find inspiration before and during my decorating process. It’s very hard to remember from year to year all that we own. It’s a much better idea to go out shopping after we’ve taken a good hard look at everything we already own.
Visiting Stores
I like to visit stores for the sole purpose of getting ideas. I take pictures of displays that catch my eye or that give me specific ideas for what I might create.
Visit Instagram for Inspiration to Create a Festive Fall Home
Of course I love Instagram for inspiration. I screen shot photos I love or save them in favorites. Sometimes, it’s a specific arrangement; sometimes it’s just a mood. But Instagram is probably my favorite place to get endless ideas. Often seeing gorgeous seasonal decor just gets me excited and motivated to begin.
Free Catalogs
Another place I love to find inspiration is in all the mail catalogs that show up at my house. I hardly ever buy things out of these catalogs, but I do get ideas and creative inspiration for my home.
Decor Magazines
Finally, I don’t buy too many magazines, and I hate subscriptions that just seem to pile up at home. But occasionally I’ll pick one up for an airplane ride or if a friend is featured. Sometimes I’ll get an idea just flipping through at the grocery check out. Magazines are still an awesome source for creative design ideas.
Budget-Friendly Tips to Create Your Festive Fall Home
I like to create new looks every year. This is challenging when I already have a lot of decor. I can’t justify buying more when I don’t need it. So, how do I create a fresh fall look without buying all new decor? My first resource is my creativity.
Do you love my statement fall farmhouse sign as much as I do? It’s so special. This chalkboard wash sign is from the fabulous makers Whitney & Allen of Oh Sweet Skye @ohsweetskye. They have a fabulous website where they sell their beautiful and unique farmhouse signs and more. Check out their latest farmhouse sign collections.
Festive Fall Home Decor Takes Creativity
Creativity is our most valuable asset. Creativity is free and it’s a joyful pursuit. It helps us reuse “old” decor, and make things seem like new. Think outside the box. It’s challenging, but a whole lot of fun. Plus, you’ll feel so good about repurposing.
Get Ready to Shop & Save
That being said, every year I have to add a few new pieces. Some new pillow covers, a couple new farmhouse signs, and a few decor items. If you are in the market to update your fall decor we have some great news. We are showcasing some of the most beautiful pillows, decor & signs, and we have savings coupon codes just for you, our loyal readers. So get ready to shop and save.
The Process to Create a Festive Fall Home: Get it All Out
I like to take out all my boxes and bins of fall decor, lay everything out in the front hallway, and have at it. I just start to play. The house usually evolves over the span of several weeks. Be ready for things to get messy before they get pretty. This is my biggest challenge because I have a hard time with chaos. But it’s a necessary part of the process. It also fuels my motivation to get at it.
I try things a certain way and let them sit. It’s a bit like musical decor until I am happy. Sometimes an idea will hit me and I’ll be moving things around late at night. Hey, when creativity hits you have to act, am I right?
This darling “Gather with Grateful Hearts” sign is one of my new decor items from @adamsandcompany. I’m over the moon. It’s perfect. They have so many signs and unique decor items for fall, Halloween, Christmas, and everyday too. Use our coupon code to shop, THEDESIGNTWINS to save 10%.
Chunky Knit Throw Savings
Nothing says fall & winter like the coziness of a chunky knit throw. They look great wherever you lay them, adding luxury, warmth and comfort to a chair or couch. We love to add these throws as an additional layer of beauty and warmth to beds during winter months. Now is the time to buy yours and save 10% with our code TWINS10 from Larissa @becozi. Larissa hand knits all her blankets. They come in many styles, sizes and colors of wool (along with other options).
Whether you choose to buy one pre-made or knit your own, you can find all you need by shopping on the Becozi website.
Amazing Fall Pillows Anyone?
How perfect is this pumpkin pillow? I know. Jodie and I are so blessed to be working with a wonderful friend, Erin of Porter Lane Home @porterlanehome. We are so excited to showcase her beautiful pillow collection. We have a very generous coupon code for 10% off her entire shop. With 555 items to choose from and 58 fall pillow designs, you’re sure to find just what you want for your home. Use our code THEDESIGNTWINS to save 10% on your order.

My Beautiful Boy
When your son’s shirt happens to match your decor you ask him to pose. This is my youngest son Julian. He’s 15 and still a joy. A mama has to show off her babies occasionally. I am so blessed.
My Festive Fall Home Gallery Wall
Here you can see a view of my newly updated gallery wall. This wall has been the same for several years, with the exception of what I add on top of the window frame. This fall I decided to change things up a bit. I added six new fall signs and a vintage spindle. These signs are from our great friend Devanie @devanie.at.home and her company Adams & Co @adamsandcompany.
More Decor Savings for You
We love the heart behind this company, Adams & Co., which is family owned and run. Jodie and I are so grateful to be working with Devanie and her husband DJ. Of course we also love them because honestly they make the cutest darn decor. Their products provide real value for your dollar, which is always important. And for you, our friends, we have additional savings. We have a coupon code, DESIGNTWINS, that you can use to save 10% on everything from their site.
Versatile Fall Decor to Create a Festive Fall Home
The vignette above showcases more of the beautiful decor items made by Adams & Co. All their pillows are reversible so you can use them year round. The trio set of wooden pumpkins are my favorites. Aren’t they darling? I know I’ll have fun decorating with them year after year. They could look cute absolutely anywhere. It’s actually hard to keep them still. I want to keep moving them. Some of you might be able to relate to this odd instinct to constantly want to change things.
I swapped out my Joanna Gaines scroll, just for a fun change. The scrolls are so easy to just roll up, store in their tubes, and swap out. They are my favorite because they weigh nothing so they’re obviously very easy to hang. We also love working with Bea, the maker of these scrolls and invite you to shop these in our Blog Shop. Click on the Wall Decor. When you click on any of her scrolls you will be taken to her many choices in her shop.
Living Room Details for a Festive Fall Home
My living room didn’t change too much for fall. I added this gorgeous wool rug from Loloi. It completey transformed the room. What else is new? These two pillows from Porter Lane Home. I wanted some year-round farmhouse style and these are perfection. Shop and save 10% with our code THE DESIGN TWINS right now.
I also added these two rustic lanterns to either side of the mantle to continue the symmetrical look and add a bit of fall warmth. Right now I have the lanterns filled with small topiaries but I might put faux candles in there soon.
Well, there you have it. My Festive Fall Home Tour. I hope you enjoyed it and are inspired to create your own seasonally festive fall home. Where did the magnolia wreath come from?
Hi JaLea,
The magnolia wreath actually came from Magnolia Home in Waco. I ordered it online. But it was several years ago. I’m not sure it’s still available. It’s a classic for sure. So glad you found our blog. We hope you continue to read and enjoy. All the best, Julie & Jodie
