What do we mean by “Spark Joy”?
This term has become very popular in the last couple of years thanks to Marie Kondo and her Konmari system of organizing. Her entire philosophy is based on this principle of sparking joy, so it’s a good place for us to start this conversation about creating a home that sparks joy.
In other words, your decor should speak to your heart and make you happy. This goal can and should guide all your decisions: what to buy, what to get rid of, how to arrange your rooms, what colors to choose. Basically everything.
When we examine what we want to own and how we choose to decorate it really comes down to a question of how we want to live. We need to take the time and learn how to visualize our ideal lifestyle and then the vision of our homes will naturally come from that understanding. If we don’t take the time and we just buy things chances are we won’t be happy with the results.
9 Easy Ways to Spark Joy in Your Home Decor
1. Be Open-Minded
In order to get in touch with what truly brings you joy you need to question old habits and open your mind to change. If you absolutely love everything you’ve created in your home, then you don’t necessarily need to do this. But if you are reading this article chances are you will benefit from tapping into a newfound awareness.
2. Determine What Sparks Joy in Your Home
Next, it’s time to figure out what is working and what is not. You can explore the Konmari method or choose our modified, real-life version of organizing. Whatever method you choose it’s important to evaluate your space. What pieces do you love? What pieces are just adding clutter?
I performed our modified system of organizing with the shelves in this room. I took everything off the shelves and asked myself what I loved and what I didn’t love.
3. Clean Out & Clear Away
Next, I sorted things into three categories:
- Donation
- Keep
- Trash
4. Examine Why it Does Not Spark Joy
Before you give it away or toss it out ask yourself why you don’t love it. Is it the color? Is it the style? Use this information to really get in touch with your evolving taste.
5. Repurpose to Spark Joy
Once you identify the reasons it doesn’t spark joy see if there is a way to remake and/or repurpose. Maybe a fresh coat of paint could transform it into a joy-sparking piece. Maybe new hardware will do the trick. Perhaps it is simply in the wrong room or arranged in a way that stops you from loving it.
6. Shop with Intention to Spark Joy
Don’t buy anything that doesn’t make your heart skip a beat. A piece should not only be a solution, solve a problem or fill a need, but the style, color, texture, lines should speak to your heart in a collective whole. You might not necessarily be able to even pinpoint what it is exactly that sparks joy, but the more you practice this intentional exercise the better you’ll get at it. As a result, you will become more and more in tune with your own personal style.
7. Experiment with New Styles to Spark Joy
Don’t be afraid to express your personality in your decor. Try something you’ve never done before. Choosing your decor should not be about what trends are hot or what Pinterest in showing. This is about you and your family, your personal identity expressed through your rooms.
With this room restyle I decided to move away from the farmhouse style and play up the modern vibe of the room. I took inspiration from the built-in Murphy bed, and the granite and warm wood tones of the built-ins. I decided to experiment with a retro, mid-century modern style. And I’m in love with how it turned out.
Jodie and I love shopping Better Homes & Gardens collection available exclusively from Walmart because there are so many styles to choose from. While there are many items available in stores, we love browsing their online selection because it is huge. No matter what style we are after we always find what we’re looking for.
It’s so exciting when we see our boxes arrive on our front porches that say “Walmart.”
8. Play with Color to Spark Joy
Don’t be afraid to play with color. We are not suggesting you buy an expensive piece of furniture for this experiment. Try out new colors with inexpensive small decor items. We suggest choosing one to two colors in a room. Add three pops of color easily with books, pillows, a throw, or small decor items. You can even cover books with construction paper to easily add color.
Since my son was home from college and loving this room, I asked him to help me choose a rug. With his help I made a total departure from the former neutral palette of the room, and guess what? We all love the transformation the rug brought to this room. It’s a whole new space, and all it took was a little courage and an open mind.
9. Stay on Budget
If you’re anything like Jodie and me we love to create gorgeous spaces, but we don’t like to spend too much. If there’s one thing we’ve learned as decorators over the past few years is this: You don’t have to break the bank to achieve amazing style and a stunning home. In fact, when we overspend we tend to add stress, experience guilt and sometimes even remorse.
With Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart products we are able to create the enviable style we crave while staying on budget for our families. The value of all their products is exceptional. Finding value-priced pieces and staying on budget definitely sparks joy in our lives.

Love these ideas! I was just thinking about redoing my office space without spending too much money. I browsed through some magazines and Pinterest and saw exactly what I wanted to do. It will require painting my existing furniture and I know hubby will not love that idea even though he winds up loving it whenever I do paint it. Thanks for all of your tips! Love you both!
Bobbi, Thank you Sweet Friend! You’re the best. Jodie and I appreciate all your support. And we’re really happy to hear our ideas are helping you plan your office redo! Blessings always, Julie & Jodie

I liked it when you shared that it is great to try out new colors with inexpensive small decor items for certain areas of your home. My wife and I are planning to decorate our living room by adding more colors to make it lively. I will suggest to her get small decor items that are colorful for the area.
